What counts as a pane? A pane is a single sheet of glass within a window frame — typically about 12–24 inches wide. A standard double-hung window has 2 panes (top and bottom). A sliding glass door panel counts as 1 pane. If your window has a grid or divided lights, count the whole glass unit as 1 pane, not each small section.
Upper-story windows require extra equipment and safety measures. A 1.25× multiplier applies to 2nd floor and 1.5× to 3rd floor panes.
